Coach Carlin to the Washington Spirit

A former Varsity Captain at Berkeley, Carlin is now playing soccer at the highest level available in the United States: The National Women's Soccer League. After spending a season with the North Carolina Courage, Carlin knew she wanted something more for her soccer career. "After my year in North Carolina, while I loved the team and the experience, I knew that I needed to go elsewhere in order to further my growth as a player. I reached out to a couple teams who I knew were light in the defensive area coming out of the 2018 season and got in contact with the Spirit, who invited me to preseason to compete for a spot."

Carlin was fully ready to compete for a spot that was not guaranteed. During the offseason, when she was not coaching at Berkeley, she was fully committed to working hard in every aspect to give herself the best opportunity to succeed. "I knew that I had put the work in over the offseason in order to improve my weaknesses, so I felt pretty confident in preseason. During the trial, I knew that I could play at the level of the team, so it was just a test of consistency to maintain the same output day in and day out."

Battling for her spot over the course of a couple weeks, it was certainly a challenge. She headed in ready to simply work and demonstrate what she can do in order to join the roster. "Preseason started Monday, March 4th, and I learned I got a trial spot Tuesday, March 12th. It was great knowing that I had earned an NWSL roster spot, and I felt accomplished knowing that my hard work had paid off!"

After earning her spot, Carlin will certainly look to make the most of the opportunity and experience. "I’m most excited to attack this season with the new team. The spirit finished close to the bottom of the table last season, and I’m hoping that with a lot of new players and a new coach, the energy here can change and we can become a formidable opponent in the NWSL." Carlin will be playing alongside some of the best players in the country, such as Rose Lavelle, Andi Sullivan, and Mallory Pugh, who are all staples on the U.S. Women's National Team.

We all here, in the Berkeley community, are very proud of Carlin and all the work she has put in, as a coach and player! We appreciated her being here during high school season and really enjoy watching her have success in the sport she loves! Go Carlin!
